What Next??? Protect Yourself from Swine Flu and other Flues

28 Apr 2009

Are you afraid? I'm not, even though you can’t listen to the radio without hearing frequent updates on the swine flu outbreak. Checking various national websites many countries are calling this the ‘next pandemic’. People are canceling travel plans. Mexico is pretty much shut down. There are cases reported in the USA, Canada, UK, pretty much all over the world. But, if you are prepared you need not fear.

Symptoms of swine flu

How well your body fends off potential pathogens depends on several layers of immune response. Your skin secretes oils that are slightly acidic and kill many pathogens on contact. Avoid stripping those oils away with soap. Use a pH-balanced cleanser. The hairs and mucous membranes in your nose and sinuses trap invaders that either get neutralized my nasal secretions or blown out onto a tissue. Saliva digests many invaders that make it into your mouth, and your tonsils secrete sticky mucous that acts like flypaper to trap invaders and digest them. Stomach acids digest invaders. And, on the deepest level, the blood has many levels of ‘fight’ including antibodies, white blood cells, phagocytes, and more. If you don’t stay well with all these defences in place, there must have been a chink in your armour.

What can you do to repair that chink? How can you prepare? What can you do to protect yourself and and your family? Here are some practical things you can do and have on hand.

Use common sense. Studies over the years have shown us that stress reduction/control is a key building block to maintaining a strong immune system. Find constructive ways to off-load stress, make lifestyle changes to reduce stress. Play! Laugh! So many people are suffering from increased stress with the economy right now. It is no wonder we are seeing the start of something that could become a pandemic!

Get enough rest. The more rundown you are, the weaker your immune system will be.
Drink enough water. Water washes the outside of our bodies and it washes the inside, too. Remember the rule of thumb is ½ ounce of water for each pound of body weight.
Get daily exercise. Keeping the lymphatic system healthy and clean, as can be done only through daily exercise, is most helpful. 30 minutes each day of moderately intense active body movement is all it takes.

Eat healthful foods. Sugar-laden and chemical-rich foods stress the body. Sugar specifically paralyzes the the white blood cells which are some of your deeper lines of defence. Dairy products increase our production of mucous - and while some mucous is helpful for trapping invaders, too much begins to clog the system and provides a cesspool for microorganisms to breed in. East basic, natural foods, eliminating sugar and most dairy (butter is fine for most people) the rest of what you need to do is easy!

Use essential oils. High-quality aromatherapy oils (not synthetic ones) kill air-borne pathogens. EOs can be effectively diffused in nebulizing diffusers. You can also make room sprays that can be used as surface cleaners. Here’s how. Combine the following in a spritz bottle. 2 oz purified water, 10 drops EO, 1 tsp witch hazel. Which oils are best? Lavender, tea tree oil, eucalyptus, and lemon are some of the most potent for disinfecting. Use the spray in the air and on surfaces. Be sure to not use this on wood products as it may ruin the finish.

Make your own anti-bacterial hand soap (shower gel) and dish soap. Here’s how. In a pump-top bottle combine 2 oz NSP Concentrate, 10 drops EO. It’s just that easy AND this is not like anti-bacterial soaps that are on the market that actually lead to bacteria and viruses mutating and getting stronger. On the contrary - micro-organisms do no mutate against natural substances. If you have a foaming soap pump for your hand soap, use a similar recipe reducing the NSP Concentrate to 1 oz with 10 - 20 drops EO, and filling the pump with water. (NSP concentrate can also be used to clean the bathroom and do your laundry! On its own, NSP concentrate kills e. Coli!)

Supplements that you want to have on-hand include Silver Shield (Silver Sol) in both the liquid and gel format, Olive leaf extract (actually comes as a capsule) and Cat’s Claw (Una da gato). The Swine flu, in particular, has a respiratory component so mullein, licorice root, and lobelia extract might be prudent to have on hand. (Silver shield Youtube)

Silver is one of the oldest known anti-biotic substances. NSPs’ Silver Shield (Silver Sol) products resonate at the same frequency as microbial disinfecting lights. You can spray Silver Shield on surfaces, drink it (1 - 2 tsp twice daily) use it topically on wounds (the gel works wonderfully for this), spray it up your nose, and gargle with it. Certainly, at the first indication of trouble brewing taking 2 Tbsp twice a day until the trouble is eradicated would be a prudent idea. This can also be misted through the house using a trigger bottle to purify the air. When used frequently as a room spray it will leave a slight greyish/silver powder residue that can be vacuumed up.

Knowing that infections only set in when the immune system has a weak link, and knowing that silver kills the infection but does not necessarily strengthen the immune system, Olive Leaf or Cat’s Claw are the next valuable steps. They pull the immune system together, strengthening it without over-stimulating it.

In the event the infection goes into the lungs, you will want to have mullein, lobelia, and licorice root on hand. This trio of herbs strengthens the lungs, liquefies mucous, and dilates bronchial passageways and could prove to be a very valuable asset in your herbal toolbox for any and all lung infections.
