We've just finished with Christmas - rich food (and lots of it), chocolate, and for many people, lots of Christmas parties with alcohol, pop, and high-sugar treats.

When it's summer here in Calgary it really means it's time for the Calgary Stampede which really means 10 days of free breakfasts provided by lots of local businesses. The usual menu is white flour pancakes, brown sugar syrup, margarine, pork sausages, and orange drink made from powder. Yumm! Lunchtimes are known to drag out for 2 - 3 hours with the blessings of the boss during the ten days of Stampede, and it's very common for them to include more liquid (aka beer) than solid food. Later in the day there tons of free company-sponsored barbques ...

12 Healthy Days of Christmas

Give yourself and your family the gift of health with these gift ideas.

Feel free to forward this to anyone, anywhere, with love and best wishes for a wonderful Christmas season and a prosperous and healthy 2012.

On the first day of Christmas my natural health coach taught me to relax for 1 hour before going to bed – without TV or computer screens. I’ll sleep better if my brain hasn’t been racing full-tilt right up until I fall into bed.

On the second day of Christmas my natural health coach taught me to eat 2 pieces of regionally growable fruit each day.

On the third day of Christmas my natural health coach taught me to eat 3 smallish meals......

If You See Yourself in this List you NEED Supplements
1. Poor digestion - Even when your food intake is good, inefficient digestion can limit your body's intake of vitamins.
2. Hot Coffee, Tea, and Spices - Habitual drinking of liquids that are too hot, or consuming an excess of irritants such as coffee, tea, or spices can cause inflammation of the digestive linings, resulting in a drop in secretion of digestive fluids and poorer extraction of vitamins and minerals from food.
3. Alcohol - Alcohol affects availability, absorption and metabolism of nutrients.
4. Smoking - Smoking too much tobacco increases the metabolic requirements of Vitamin C.  Vitamin C is ......

Osteoporosis is a very real problem, and while it does affect women it also affects  men.

Bones are living tissue. They serve as calcium bank accounts. Calcium goes in and calcium comes out. Thyrocalcitonin, a hormone produced by the thyroid glands stimulates the assimilation of calcium into the bones. Parathormone from the parathyroid glands draws calcium out of bones.

Calcium plays some key roles in the body. It is responsible for maintaining the dynamic acid/alkaline balance of the blood and tissues. When your blood is too acidic your body has a choice to make: pull calcium out of your bones to neutralize the acid and save your life or let the acid continue to escalate and let you die. Fortunately, it ...

Just ask them and they'll tell you!  If it's not problems with school, then it's problems with friends or it's problems at work, or it's problems with the 'physical-ness' of growing up.  While we don't necessarily have herbs that will directly solve problems with school, friends, or work, we can certainly help our teens with the physical and emotional adjustments of growing up and that will make everything else a little easier to bear.

The first and most important way to help adolescents is through sound nutrition.  One of the challenges is that kids have their own money these days and will often grab a snack at the convenience store or get lunch at the fast-food ......

Just to set the record straight it’s PROSTATE, not prostRate.  (To be prostrate is to lay face down.)  Now that we’ve dealt with that little matter…on to the details.

The prostate is a gland found only in males and it is one of the leading causes of health problems in men over 40 years.  It is walnut-sized, doughnut-shaped, strongly muscled, and encircles the urethra just below the bladder.  The urethra is the tube that carries urine from the bladder out through the penis.  The urethra also carries sperm from the testicles to the outside world during orgasm.

Being a gland, the prostate secretes (since that’s what glands do) a substance for a specific purpose, in this ...

The transition beyond dairy usually leads most "dairy-free"ers towards a soy-based cuisine. Soy products are big business and touted as miracle health foods. Studies of Asian cultures, particularly in Japan, have emphasized that soy is their key to good health. However, it is revealing to note that soy used in Japan is traditionally used in small amounts as a condiment and it is usually in a fermented form.

  • Soy is naturally a low-mineral food offering little as a staple replacement for meat of diary
  • Soy contains potentially harmful phytates which chelate certain minerals before they can even be absorbed by the ......

When it comes to ‘fitness chemistry’ few things are more complicated to understand , the subject of rumours, and potentially misused ,than amino acids.

Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins. The twenty amino acids required for human life fall into two categories. The eleven non-essential amino acids can be manufactured in our bodies on an as needed basis. The nine essential amino acids must be supplied in the diet because we cannot make them.

Glutamine is a ‘conditionally essential’ amino acid. While we can make it. In times of physical stress or injury our demand for it increases beyond our capacity to replace it so taking supplemental amounts of it can be helpful. One challenge of using ...

There is much controversy about caffeine of late. Some research is saying it’s good for you. Studies with athletes are showing it enhances endurance. While these may be true, we need to stop dissecting it to look for the little bits of good and look at it as a whole to see the picture clearly. I think you may see that when all the details are examined the tiny bit of good that caffeine offers is not worth the trade-off. Read on!

Caffeine, available in forms as widely variable as coffee, chocolate, energy drinks, over-the-counter medications, and prescriptions is one or the most widely used, completely legal drugs in the world.  As a drug, it is habit forming and produces physical and mental changes in all who ...
